The judge’s gavel struck the bench three sharp times.
“Order! I will have order in this courtroom!”
Even so, his command barely pierced the uproar that exploded around him. Shocked gasps rippled through the gallery, followed by frantic whispers and the scraping of chairs against the floor. After a tense pause, he declared a thirty‑minute recess.
Yet before anyone could fully react, Lily broke free and ran straight toward Emily.
Two bailiffs stepped forward instinctively to intercept her, but the defense attorney lifted a calming hand.
“It’s the victim’s daughter,” he murmured quietly toward the bench.
Emily leaned forward as far as the handcuffs around her wrists would allow.
Lily clutched the cold chain between Emily’s bound hands and rose onto her toes, pressing her lips close to her ear so no one else could hear.
“I saw everything, Emily,” the child whispered.
“I saw what she did.”
Six months earlier, the Morales residence had felt like a completely different world.
Late afternoon sunlight streamed through the tall living room windows, casting a golden glow across polished mahogany cabinets and the Persian rugs Michael had brought back from his overseas business trips.
Lily sat cross‑legged on the floor surrounded by her dolls — but she wasn’t playing.
She was watching.
On the sofa, the adults chatted and laughed as though they were performers in a play whose plot she didn’t understand.
“Lily, sweetheart, come here,” Michael called, using that particular tone he reserved for moments when he wanted her full attention. “There’s someone very important I’d like you to meet.”
The woman seated beside him was strikingly beautiful.
Her dark hair shimmered like something out of a fairy tale. She wore an elegant blue dress that looked expensive even to a child’s eyes. When she smiled, her teeth gleamed flawlessly white.
“Hello, sweetheart,” the woman said, leaning forward gracefully. “I’m Vanessa. Your dad and I are getting married soon.”
Lily looked up at her father, confused.
“Does that mean you won’t have to travel so much anymore?” she asked.
Michael chuckled and lifted her into his arms.
“It means Vanessa will be joining our lives in a very special way,” he began, smiling down at her, ready to explain exactly what that would mean.
